This video is insane, the guy doesn't help the dog out at all. The dog (being a boxer) has whats called "boxer cardiomyopathy", its a genetic disease that causes Syncope (sin-co-pe) which is fainting. This is caused by an irregular heartbeat. When the heart isn't regularly pumping blood through the pulmonic artery (artery that leads from the heart to the lungs to perform its gas exchange between co2 and o2 in the alveoli of the lungs) the dog will have a lack of useable oxygen in its system going to the brain for consciousness and this causes the fainting (syncope). The dog in this video DOES NOT need CPR, it needs time to relax and allow its heart and lungs to catch up.
When he is performing "CPR", his hands are not even in the correct location, to find where you would place your hands for compressions, you'd raise the up leg so the "elbow" is above the ribs, and above the heart. By compressing here, you force blood out of the heart as well as compress the lungs a little bit, this is used in emergency veterinary care when the patient is "coding". This means that its the last ditch effort, in other words, the dog is going to die because all medical techniques have been exhausted. The actual act of CPR on a dog is more of a show for the owners, to prove that you have tried everything. If the need for ventilation were dire, they would be on a AMBU bag (manual hand pump to get air into the lungs of a patient. Or they might have the money and equipment for a breathing machine...not likely tho unless in a emergency care clinic.
The success rate of CPR on dogs is around 2%. If you were an owner in a vet hospital with your dog who was just hit by a car and was definitely going to die, wouldn't you feel better seeing CPR performed just in the off chance it works? Thats what its for, for you, not the dog.
In this video, the man "helping" the dog is actually causing more problems. He runs the risk of fracturing a rib or worse, breaking a rib which could puncture the lung and cause atelectasis (collapsed lung), as well as causing the heart to stay out of rhythm, further increasing the lack of O2 to the brain.
This video makes me sick in the stomach to see that this man is a "hero" when all he did was act out the "help". Had he of been educated(Sorry for my wording, in a bit of a mood after watching the video), he could have informed the owner of the condition and kept her calm the entire time. AND, had he of even LISTENED to the dogs heart, he would have heard it still beating, even the lungs would be audible to some extent without a stethoscope.
All in all, this video is just 8 minutes of stress, suffering, and horrible attempts to fix whats not broken. This boxer cardiomyopathy is a somewhat common inherited genetic disease among boxer breeds and it comes and goes with exercise. This disease can lead to future complications like an enlarged heart. But there is nothing that can be done to prevent this. Genetics suck
TLDR: This boxer in the video has "boxer cardiomyopathy", a genetic disease that only boxers (and some English Bulldogs) get. Its an irregular beat of the heart that causes a poor (blood flow for) oxygen exchange in the pulmonary artery, thus leading to lack of oxygen to the brain causing fainting (syncope). This happens when the dog gets too excited and playful and the heart can't keep up with the O2 demand.
The guy in the video is an uneducated man who gave it his best shot based off of a guess. I'm glad he tried something, but he could have made things a lot worse.
