"THIS is the moment that a builder's leg was almost ripped off in a horrific DIY accident.
Former paratrooper Jake Weir was demolishing a garage when it collapsed and buried him in a heap of bricks and concrete last June.
His leg was left hanging on by only a strand of skin but it was saved after a gruelling six-hour operation at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham.
Jake, 33, was able to view the gruesome injury because it had all been filmed by the man who had hired him to carry out the demolition job in Lincs.
He said: "I have flashbacks of that moment. I honestly thought I was gone. It still haunts me.
"When I first saw the video it was difficult to watch. My leg was hanging off basically."
The dad-of-one had been married for only ten months when he took on the demolition assignment.
He added: "I thought I was going to die, but when I saw the dust settle on the bricks and realised I was still alive my adrenalin kicked in and I started to drag myself out of the mess.
"I pulled myself from the rubble and looked down to see my legs in knots. I couldn't feel any pain though -- it was a strange sensation, I was just numb."
Incredibly, less than a year after the accident, Jake is back on his feet and has just gone back to work.
He said: "It was certainly a wake-up call which makes you put your life in perspective. I'm just so thankful I'm alive.""
