Portions of Chicago’s rail system were temporarily suspended Sunday night as a severe storm triggered sparks, explosions and what appears to be a train derailment at a Blue Line station.
Dramatic video was captured by a car driving parallel to the station. Electrified tracks are seen sparking and as the video continues there are explosions and the woman in the video is heard shouting, “The train is off the tracks!”
The Chicago Fire Department was initially called to the rail station for a lightning strike on the structure.
According to The Chicago Tribune, debris and potentially a tree fell on the tracks, causing the apparent derailment.
The Chicago Transit Authority also tweeted that debris from the station had fallen onto the tracks and was being removed.
Service is running on one track in the area as crews work to restore normal operations by morning.
No injuries were reported, but a nearby train was evacuated.
