Deze mensen zijn verdomd goed in hun werk en hebben geen wapen nodig. Dit was even eng, maar dit had in Nederland ook eng geweest.

Chapter 1: Methodology

This deliverable provides an overview of the evaluation deployed for OrganiK and its results. The key principle in the research design adopted in OrganiK was to ground the development of the knowledge management framework and knowledge management system in organisational everyday work practices and problem solving activities.
The methodology used for the evaluation is a direct follow-up of the methodology used to extract the user requirements. In contrast to the requirements analysis however, data collection was primarily done utilising feedback provided during key-milestones in the delivery of the project during development and implementation, constantly providing scope for improvement of the development through the evaluation of the responses of the SMEs. The collection of data has been conducted by using a qualitative data-collection method, grounded action research (Baskerville & Pries-Heje, 1999, Vasconcelos et al.,2009). This approach stems from the rationale of adopting a socio-technical approach for OrganiK. Although IT inspired knowledge management, it can not deliver it effectively according to Tsui (2005) and McDermott (1999). The distance between the technical and social aspects of an IT-system is known as the socio-technical gap, by adopting a socio-technical approach OrganiK aims to address this issue during the development process.
The idea of ‘grounding action research’ is not new and Dick (2007) provides a review of various applications in several fields. Most studies reviewed by Dick (2007) represent Action Research approaches and cycles where Grounded Theory principles have been integrated to ensure greater rigour in theory development. An approach based on Grounded Action Research enables the understanding of complex environments which is critical to the objectives of the project and its overall aim of adopting an approach that is grounded in the work practices of the participating SMEs (Baskerville & Pries-Heje, 1999).
The inclusion of a quantitave element, although considered, has been dismissed for the following reasons:
• OrganiK is more than a system. A quantitave method would not provide in-depth insight into the OrganiK framework for Knowledge Management in SMEs.
• The key functionality of OrganiK occurs through Semantic Technology. Although it is possible to measure the responses of this functionality, a heuristical approach would fail to demonstrate much more than pre-set queries offering the desired answers.
• Communication within the project between SMEs and RTD partners is considered vital to the success of OrganiK. The use of a phased evaluation approach stimulates communication at regular intervals. A quantitave testing method could only be deployed once the system is operational and thus forfeit the opportunity of the SMEs to feedback into the development.
• Using Drupal, one of the most popular open source content management systems which benefits from constant development and a high maturity as a product, ensures that OrganiK is developed on top of a strong base, replicating quantitative analysis of the elements provided by Drupal would not add value to the OrganiK project.
• The SMEs have very different ideas about the use of the system in the context of each of their work environments. A quantitative study relies on comparable results. This would not be achieved with five varying deployments.
From this background the following evaluation framework has been used for the evaluation:












The evaluation framework is designed around three dimensions: i) the knowledge management framework, ii) the knowledge management system and iii) the impact, as an Action Research process several evaluative loops are considered throughout key stages of the project. Much of the evaluation will be carried out through focus groups and targeted interviews, complemented by testing of the system. The various evaluative loops, typically structured around the key milestones and deliverables of the project, allow the identification of specific learning issues that enable the project to adapt as a result of the various diagnosis results and allow corresponding actions to changes in requirements and circumstances.
